In Victoria, a building permit is legally required for most construction, demolition, or structural renovation projects to ensure safety and compliance with regulations. This must be issued by a registered building surveyor. 

Planning Permit approves the use and location of a development, focusing on how it fits into the local area (e.g., land use, design, impact on neighbors).

The Building Activity Management System (BAMS) is an online portal launched by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) to streamline the building permit process in Victoria.

Regulation 116 relates to protection of the public. Approval is issued by council which allows works to be conducted on the public footpath or adjoining public land.
