Pliable membrane installation – update in NCC 2022

PCG previously wrote an article stating that NCC 2019 called up AS4200.2: 2017 for the installation of pliable building membranes (i.e wall sarking). The article can be found here https://www.pcgroup.net.au/news/installation-of-building-wall-wraps/

We wish to highlight that when NCC 2022 became effective on May 1^st 2023, an amended version of AS4200.2 also came into effect. This version is known as AS4200.2: 2017 (Incorporating Amendment Numbers 1 and 2). Despite the Standard still being the 2017 version, the Amendments only became effective under NCC 2022.

There is a change between the versions regarding the cutting of the membrane at windows, doors and other openings.

The previous version of the Standard required the membrane to be cut and dressed into all sides of the opening, and had example figures showing how it should be completed.

The current NCC 2022 version of the Standard incorporating Amendments 1 and 2 has removed the figures, and has changed the wording to state that the membrane shall be cut and dressed to achieve the desired function of the membrane. Therefore they deleted the words “into all sides of the opening” from the clause.

This implies the cutting of the membrane into the opening is left up to the installer and manufacturer’s guidance in order to achieve the desired function of the membrane, and may be done after the window is installed.
