Sound insulation between dwellings

Sound insulation is required between Class 1 buildings where separating walls are of discontinuous construction.

The National Construction Code (NCC) requires a minimum 20mm cavity between the leaves of the wall system, however each proprietary wall will have their own cavity requirements.

When designing and installing separating walls, PCG recommends referring to the system’s installation manual for information on cavities, acoustic performance, construction joints, set out and fixings.

Correct installation will minimize sound transmission between dwellings and thus improve amenity for occupants.
